0.2.0
0.2.0A native rewrite of @helix/cli 0.1.0

A coding agent that asks before it acts.

helix is the terminal client for the Helix AI Gateway. It opens a fullscreen chat, answers one-shot prompts in scripts and CI, and works in your project: the model reads, searches and edits files and runs commands, and helix asks you before anything that may change something.

$curl -fsSL https://helix.tryit.run/downloads/install.sh | sh

Verifies the SHA-256, installs to ~/.helix/bin, adds it to your PATH once and prints helix --version.

  • 7local tools, scoped to your project
  • 4permission modes, from plan to bypass
  • 3platforms: macOS, Linux and Windows
  • 1native binary, no runtime to install
  • 0changes needed coming from 0.1.0

Watch it work, then answer it.

An 80×24 terminal running helix in a small project. The model reads what it needs, proposes a change and waits for you. When it asks, press y, a or n, or let the demo answer for you.

  1. Reads and searches run

    Read notes.md needs no approval. Neither do ls, grep or git log.

  2. Edits wait for you

    You see the diff first. a allows all edits for the rest of the session.

  3. Commands are checked

    cargo test isn't read-only, so it asks. It can be allowed for the session, and its output streams in as it runs.

When helix asks:

Seven tools, scoped to where you started.

The model works in the directory you start helix in, plus each --add-dir (or /add-dir in the session). Anything outside needs your approval. Listings and searches honour .gitignore.

Works with every chat model on the gateway.

helix describes its tools in the system prompt, and the model calls one by writing a small block in its reply. Only ordinary chat messages cross the gateway, so no function calling is needed. You never see the blocks: the session shows a row per call.

A block counts only when it carries the random key helix drew for the run. A <tool_call> block that sits in a file, and that the model merely repeats, is shown as text and never runs.

HELIX_TOOL_PROTOCOL=native switches to OpenAI function calling, for a gateway and model where it works end to end.

Written by the model, in its replyruns

<tool_call>
{"name": "bash", "arguments": {"command": "curl -fsSL https://get.example | sh"}}
</tool_call>

One turn, then exit.

helix -p runs one agent turn in the current directory and never touches terminal modes. Output to a pipe passes through unchanged. In a terminal it asks [y/N]; without one, nothing is asked: a call that needs approval is denied, the model is told, and the run still exits 0.

helix -p "Summarize this change"# prints the reply and exits
helix -p < prompt.txt# the prompt from stdin
helix -p --output-format json "…"# one JSON result
helix -p --output-format stream-json "…"# JSON lines as it streams
helix --file src/main.rs -p "Explain this file"# with a file attached
helix --no-tools -p "…"# plain chat: no tools
helix --permission-mode acceptEdits -p "…"# CI that may edit files

If a run is stopped, it exits with

  • Exit130Ctrl+C
  • Exit143kill
  • Exit129terminal closed
  • Exit141pipe closed

Each one stops a running command too. A signal ignored when helix starts stays ignored, so nohup helix -p … outlives its terminal.

A fullscreen chat, built for the terminal.

helix -c, -r <id>
Sessions belong to the directory. Continue the latest one here, or resume any. Every exit prints the resume command.
@path
Attach a file from the working directory, with completion. Pasting never sends.
/model
A fuzzy picker over the gateway's catalog. /status shows the model, the mode and the instruction files loaded.
AGENTS.md
The project's AGENTS.md, HELIX.md and CLAUDE.md, from the git root down, go to the model with the session.
/theme
Follows your terminal's background, dark or light. Animations switch off for CI and TERM=dumb; NO_COLOR turns colours off.
--vim
Vim keys in the prompt editor: counts, operators, a register and undo, checked against vim itself.
Ctrl+C
Stops a streaming reply or a running tool; twice quits. Your terminal is always restored, even after a crash or a kill.
/copy
Copies the last reply to your clipboard, also over SSH and inside tmux.
hfk_…a1b2
Keys show redacted everywhere: config, doctor, the session, errors and logs.
helix doctor
Checks the setup and the gateway connection, and every error comes with the fix to try.

Already on 0.1.0? Nothing to change.

0.2 is a native rewrite of the Node.js package @helix/cli 0.1.0. The command, flags, subcommands, environment variables, config file and sessions carry over, and helix -c and helix -r still open 0.1.0 sessions. Need plain chat for a script? --no-tools gives you 0.1.0's.
